Greece: The Southern Coast

This exploration of the Greek coastline offers historic tales, inviting footpaths leading to hillside vineyards, olive groves, whitewashed towns, and age-old Mediterranean ports with secluded beaches and seaside accommodations. Start at the Parthenon, the Acropolis, and other essential sites in Athens. Then cross the walled Corinth Canal to Kalamata and the 18th-century frescoes of the deserted church of Agia Theodoroi.

A scenic trek to Platti Ammo leads to a swim on a quiet beach ringed by tamarisk trees, and lunch in the fishing village of Agios Nikolaos. Enter a Mycenaean tomb where gods are reputedly buried, and follow ancient trails to coastal settlements made famous by Homer. In unspoiled Proastio, you’ll visit an olive-oil mill before lunch in the village square, and paddle the Glyfada sea caves through chambers filled with delicate geological formations. Explore the tower village of Vathia, the region’s most photographed spot, and finish in Mystras’ remarkable Byzantine ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage site that alone makes this an essential trip.
